Only yesterday I played a new online game that is designed to create a virtual world where you can practice your social skills. And, you may well have heard of virtual realities like Second Life, and you’ve probably noticed that RTRFM has a spruced up virtual home right here at rtrfm.com.au but just what do we as consumers make of all these virtual actualities?

The text acts on a multiplicity of levels: creating the context, adding meanings, on how the viewer navigates the screen space, how the viewer navigates the room and how one actually modifies one’s position in relation to what is being communicated.

What meanings are evoked when you see two representations of your mediated self on the screen simultaneously and in realtime? What happens to that representation once it is stored as a record of that moment?

The text embedded with the piece sets a context in which to negotiate the work. This text is not intended to be didactic, rather it acts as a site for possible ways to interpret the work. It references words from common usage - from newspapers, online sites and so forth to challenge the associations that are made. It is hoped this will offer new meanings and awareness of how we are impacted upon by the social structures.
